Hey There

Welcome to my blog. Coffee and sarcasm served here with a touch of sass and sunshine. Follow me through all of my missteps and mishaps.

Is there room for yarn?

Is there room for yarn?

Is there enough room in the coat closet for all this yarn? Not really. That doesn’t stop me. I must buy yarn. I love to crochet. It is one area of my life that is near perfect. I will crochet blankets, slippers, skirts, purses, dress, puppets, stuffed animals, I would crochet a car cover for the family grocery getter if my husband would let me. I would cover every cushioned piece of furniture in crochet, along with windows, walls, the cat, if it is stationary it’s not safe I will make a cover for it. The problem is that I tend to have all these left-over balls of yarn, I will work into granny squares, scrubbies, cleaning rags; but only after my main projects are finished. That means lots of smaller balls of yarn lying about.

Kids are good at trying to keep them contained, but like rabbits, they seem to multiply and escape from their storage containers. This is when I start to employ things like empty coffee tins, those huge cheese ball containers, extra purses, bushel baskets, and even my husband’s luggage if I can. The reality is that they don’t ever go away. They keep multiplying.

Then wouldn’t you know my mother calls up on the phone and asks if I want to make a yarn foray in town. We hit a small store that is often full of yarn, floor to ceiling full of yarn. I love it, and that it is individually owned, not a chain store, I like that even more. So, mom and I will make our way their every spring when the weather is nice, roads are safe, and it isn’t yard sale time. We spend hours, picking and choosing the yarns we want to try. Then we take out little handbaskets to the register and I know we make their day. They usually find us boxes to carry our stash.

My husband’s response is usually something like this:

“but you already have a lot of yarn, boxes, bins, and coffee tins. Do you really need more?”

That’s when I must explain to him that the small balls left over are good for small scrap projects, not larger projects I need more full skeins of yarn. Then I proceed to tell him all the projects I have planned for all the yarn. Some women like jewelry as gifts, I just want yarns and a “she-shed” to hide in to crochet and a shed for the yarn, and an attic, and the coat closet and the…

Crochet is not my only love, I like to work in paper. Papier Mache, Decoupage and even making baskets from newspapers. This requires me to save a lot of newspapers and have a lot of glue on hand. I will make trinket boxes from cereal boxes, so those gets saved as well. I do try not to let it get to much, because I need room for yarn. I also love visiting places like Hobby Lobby for their scrap book paper and stamps.

As I mentioned in my story of yard sales I have wine bottles that I paint as well, but I usually wait until there is warm weather for that so that I can paint outside, I tend to be a might bit clumsy. In the meantime, people just bring over more corks and wine bottles. Makes me happy, not so much the husband. I do think though that corks can be used as bobbers for fishing, and if I can make him see my way, it might make it easier on his mind.

This page I will share with you some ideas and crafts that I make along the way. I love showing off things I make.  I also keep looking for other crafts and ideas; vintage crochet and crafts are my passion. I love reviving old patterns. I also look for old patterns at places like thrift stores, especially décor patterns. There are so many things I love to experiment with in the world of crafts. There just isn’t enough house to store my materials with everyone and the cat crammed in here. It might be possible I could get my darling husband to buy a small pole barn for the back, cut some windows in it, toss in some cots, a wood stove and they can all live out there. It’ll be fun, like camping! Then I could fill all the extra bedrooms with supplies and materials. There just might be enough space for all the projects I want to accomplish!

Yes, I do have a bucket list of all the crafts I want to do, but it would take almost 100 years to complete. I’m not sure my children would want to inherit my list, patterns, supplies or materials, so I better get started. To begin with, there are some yarn balls threatening to take over the hallway and I better granny-square those up quick. Especially if I want to get more yarn. After all, there is a Flamingo in my head just wanting to be crocheted.
